Duck down is one of the most effective natural insulators. The 90/10 blend contains 90% down and 10% small feathers, which help maintain loft and the shape of the filling.
The down is RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certified and treated with a hydrophobic Teflon™ finish that helps reduce moisture absorption and maintain insulating performance.
At regular intervals, thicker fibers forming a grid are woven transversely and longitudinally into the tropic material, thereby preventing further crack propagation if the fabric is torn.

Pinguin Magma 900
A warm down sleeping bag for winter conditions, trekking, camping and sleeping in freezing temperatures. Magma 900 provides a high thermal reserve while retaining good packability thanks to its down insulation. It is available in three lengths for users up to 175, 185 and 195 cm tall.
Magma 900 is the new generation of the Magma winter sleeping bag and replaces the previous Magma 1000 in the current range.
RDS-certified down with hydrophobic treatment
Insulation is provided by 90/10 duck down with a fill power of 700 cuin, treated with a hydrophobic Teflon™ finish. The treatment helps reduce moisture absorption, allows the down to dry faster and helps it retain its loft and insulating performance in damp conditions.
The hydrophobic treatment does not make the down or the sleeping bag waterproof. Its purpose is to increase the down filling's resistance to moisture, which can otherwise cause down clusters to stick together and reduce their ability to trap an insulating layer of air.
The down is certified according to the RDS (Responsible Down Standard). The standard sets requirements for animal welfare and ensures traceability of certified down throughout the supply chain.
The amount of down varies according to the sleeping bag length:
- 175 cm: 825 g of down
- 185 cm: 900 g of down
- 195 cm: 965 g of down
The number 900 in the model name refers to the amount of down insulation in the 185 cm version.
What does 700 cuin mean?
Cuin indicates the fill power of down, meaning the volume a given amount of down can achieve when fully lofted. Higher fill power generally allows a better insulation-to-weight ratio.
However, fill power alone does not determine how warm a sleeping bag is. Thermal performance also depends on the amount of down, chamber construction, shape and overall design of the sleeping bag.
Trapezoidal chambers
The down is distributed in trapezoidal chambers. Internal baffles separate the individual sections of insulation, helping to keep the down evenly distributed and reducing migration and clumping.
This construction also avoids simple stitching through both layers of fabric and helps reduce cold spots through which heat could escape more easily.
Thermal comfort for winter conditions
Magma 900 has the following temperature ratings:
- Comfort: -7 °C
- Limit: -14 °C
- Extreme: -35 °C
When choosing a sleeping bag, use the Comfort rating as the primary guide for planning normal overnight use.
The Limit rating represents a lower temperature threshold for a less cold-sensitive sleeper. Extreme is an emergency rating and should not be regarded as a recommended temperature for regular sleeping.
With a winter sleeping bag, it is also sensible to allow for some thermal reserve. How cold you feel is affected by fatigue, humidity, wind, clothing, the quality and insulation of your sleeping pad, and your individual sensitivity to cold.
Weight by length
- 175 cm: 1455 g, with 825 g of down
- 185 cm: 1580 g, with 900 g of down
- 195 cm: 1690 g, with 965 g of down
The amount of insulation increases with the sleeping bag length, so the longer versions are not simply extended versions with the same amount of filling.
How to choose the right length
The 175 / 185 / 195 cm designation indicates the maximum recommended user height. For example, if you are 182 cm tall, choose the 185 cm version.
A slightly longer sleeping bag is not a problem. However, we do not recommend choosing a model shorter than your body height. If your body presses against the footbox or hood, the insulation can become compressed, reducing thermal comfort in areas particularly sensitive to cold.
The simple rule is: choose the nearest sleeping bag length that is equal to or greater than your body height.
The mummy shape, with a width of 85 cm at the shoulders and 55 cm at the footbox, reduces unnecessary internal space that your body would otherwise need to warm.
Packability and compression sack
Magma 900 comes with a compression sack. The Ø 18 × 37 cm dimensions refer to the sleeping bag packed in the sack before the compression straps are fully tightened.
Once tightened, the packed length can be reduced to approximately 23 cm, resulting in fully compressed dimensions of Ø 18 × 23 cm.
Tip for maximum compression: First use your body weight to gradually compress the sleeping bag in the sack, for example by carefully pressing down with your knee. Then tighten the individual compression straps gradually, working around the sack. Do not tighten one strap fully at once. Go around the sack several times, tightening each strap a little further on every pass.
The minimum packed size you can achieve also depends on your strength and body weight. A lighter person may not be able to compress the sleeping bag quite as much as a heavier user.
Use the compression sack primarily for transport. For long-term storage, keep the down sleeping bag loosely stored or place it in a large breathable storage bag so that the insulation remains uncompressed.
Zips and connecting two sleeping bags
Magma 900 is equipped with high-quality YKK zips and is available with either a right-hand or left-hand zip.
A right-hand and left-hand version can be connected together to create a shared sleeping space.

New Magma 900 vs. previous Magma 1000
Magma 900 replaces the previous Magma 1000 in the current range. It is therefore not an additional temperature category alongside Magma 1000, but the new generation of this winter sleeping bag line.
The previous Magma 1000 used a larger amount of down insulation and was designed as a very warm winter sleeping bag for severe freezing conditions. The new Magma 900 uses less down and represents its successor in the current collection.
The numbers 900 and 1000 should therefore not be interpreted simply as an indication of which sleeping bag is better or warmer. They primarily refer to the amount of down insulation used in the standard size. The final performance of the sleeping bag also depends on fill power, chamber construction, shape and other design features.
If you are familiar with Magma 1000, Magma 900 is its direct successor in the new generation of the Magma range.
How to care for a down sleeping bag
After use, allow the sleeping bag to dry thoroughly and air it out. Do not store it compressed in the compression sack for long periods, as prolonged compression is not suitable for maintaining the loft of the down insulation.
When packing for a trip, there is no need to roll the sleeping bag carefully. Stuffing it gradually into the sack distributes stress on the filling differently each time and also helps make efficient use of the full volume of the compression sack.
